Cats ate onions - A LOT OF THEM?

Two nights ago my cats ate the onions out of a roast of beef (well done). I only just found from a neighbour that onions are highly toxic to cats. We do not feed our cats vegetables - they stole them out of the dogs dinner. There was about 3-4 tablespoons of onion in there.
I will be taking them to town tomorrow for the vet to look at but does anyone know if well cooked onions would have the same toxic affects as uncooked onions or did we (hopefully) cook the toxins out of the onions?
I have a list from my vets office of foods that cats and dogs should have. Onions are missing from this list. If my neighbour had not told me otherwise - I'd have never realized this.
EDIT THAT STATEMENT to read ""SHOULDN'T HAVE""
The two cats and the dog will be at the vets as soon as they open in the morning.
