Catching carp fishing in lakes?

I am going up to Buffalo NY soon and I want to go after the biggest carp in the lake. This is a lake that is roughly 45 minutes from lake Erie. It is a man made lake that consists of 3 ponds that were connected together. so i would like to get pointers,baits, habits, and there habitats. thank you.
 
At this time of year they might be spawning and if they are spawning they wont bite. if they arent spawning then you can use simple baits like corn to chum out the fish then just tyes of bread to catch the fish.
