Catalytic Converter

When I replaced my cat equipped head pipes, I stored them in my attic just in case I ever needed them for something. The head pipe was just way to hot with that cat installed. I just cant see going through all the trouble to drill out the cat material. Just doesnt seem worth it to me.
 
You guys that put on true duals or remove your catalytic converters...are you in states that do not do motorcycle emission testing? If so, how do you get them to pass without putting your old exhaust system back on when you take it down for the sticker? Just wondering.
 
Minnesota never tested in out state, where I'm at. We did have a smog problem in the Twin Cities for a few years, but not since 1999. No testing since 2000.

I run "modified" slash cut stock mufflers off an '06 Road King (the cat's been removed and about a third of the front of the baffle plus the baffle plates), so my mufflers still look stock from the rear, carry the EPA stamp, are not loud, and have never had a problem when traveling.
 
MA does not test emissions on bikes, but I will still hold onto my stock stuff just in case they decide to in the future. The service guy I spoke to also told me that at least for MA the cat is not required, so there is no issue of them removing it.
 
I was thinking about getting a 2011. Now I know I have to add $1000 to $1500 to get the bike to sound right, run right, and keep from burning my leg off.
I may rethiink this whole thing and just spend some money upgrading my 2008.
It will be a lot cheaper then buying a new bike and then spending more money getting it to run as good as my old one.
 
Their is another way around it. If you are handy with tools and dont mind getting your hands dirty. You can keep your stock exhaust and have cat-less head pipe. Any modification you do that removes the cat, will require you to remap the ECU.

but after taking me 4 hours to remove it and install the V&H Power Duals, my hands and wrists aren't able to do it again for quite a while. After I had everything together I took it for a quick test ride and came back to check for loose stuff. Gave the muffler clamp a pull with the wrench and 'twang' Broke the frigging bolt. So I had to take the slip on off just to get another clamp on. Didn't yank on that one too tight. After all this the guy at the dealer laughed when I told him how long it took me and said "we only charge 1 hour to re and re the head pipes' I think I must have looked a little funny while I stood there and just stared at him, then I said "f*#k off", with a bit of a smile of course.
1 hour?? Oh well, I love wrenching on my bike and I always learn something new. I'm not so nervous tightening a bolt into aluminum anymore. Sure stripped a lot on my metrics over the years. Anyway, I digress from the O.P.
Yes your bike will benefit greatly by loosing the cats, just keep them 'in case'.

Someones bitter!

I really won't worry about bikes being emissions tested,,,,, not at all because life's too short to worry about little things.
I'll gut my cat, love the sound and improved performance of my bike, and IF,, IF they decide to start emissions testing, then I'll deal with it however I have to.. no big deal....
