I saw it the other day, and jus took my dad to see it today for a fathers day gift.
He loved it. Being a former racer himself, and a huge motor head, he appreciated all the little homages paid throughout the movie. And the classic NASCAR style when it was REALLY Stock Car Racing. The attention to detail in the movie, especially with the engine sounds of the cars, is just fantastic. And the creative use of the snoring jake brake on Mack, and the slight knocking sound in Doc Hudsons voice as he talks. Right down to the ripping sound of the Hudson Hornet, to the stechato of the Porsche Boxter, and the rumble of pig iron american V8's.
Really the only thing i think the movie lacked...was Burt Reynolds. Chick's charector was MADE for Burt Reynolds. THe mustache, the style of car, it was really all Stroker Ace to a T. But im sure there was some contractural issue, or simply that he didnt want to do it, that prevented him from being in the movie. But good god, the movie would be 11ty billion times better with Burt, then Keaton. Oh well.
Either way, its IMHO, the BEST Pixar movie to date, and one of the best "car" movies i think ive ever seen. Becuase it does pay tribute to so many car movies and so many motor head "isms". If you love cars, you will love "Cars", its just that simple.
