Caring for a cat with broken leg and open wound?

One of my cats came home about a week ago with a big hole in his skin of his front right leg, just below the elbow. I've given him a dose of antibiotics, and continue to apply a topical antibiotic ointment. The wound looks very good at this point. Although I can't se a broken bone, I can see that the top of the leg bone is not connected to the elbow.
My concern is the open wound. It's between the size of a nickle and a quarter. A semi-clear fluid continues to drain from the wound. My friend at a Vet hospital, who got me all the medications, hasn't suggested I do anything else, just let nature take it's course. (I have kept him inside, which has only become an issue in the last day or so.)
He's eating well, and getting around really well. I've seen him move his right shoulder, and seen some movement in the paw as well.
I'm willing to help him where I can; however, any sort of hospitalization or surgery is not feasible.
