Carb. problems on 79 ford 302?

I just rebuilt the card on my 79 ford (302) and put a automatic choke back on it, it was a manual when I bought it used. The problem is when it's cold it works fine but it will not kick down in rpms when I need it to. I have to play with the chock and the gas for 5 maybe 10 min to kick it down almost feels like something is sticking. Is there anyone that had the same problem and is it fixable or am I looking at buying a knew choke? TY
