Car tire on my Road King

If you read through the posts, you will find out we already stated that it wouldn't be a good idea for a sports bike. But its a great idea for a tourer.

For another thing, we have nothing to prove to you, or Rossi and we couldn't care less about the MotoGP or Yamaha. This is not even relevant to the thread.
Try not to attend a Honda Gold Wing rally (Wing Ding, they call it) because you are going to spend the whole day pissed off, with car tires up the wazzoo.

Now go back and reread your post. Does it have anything constructive, or just hate? Why? Why does this bother you so bad? if you don't like it, why even open up the thread? perhaps you don't have the balls to try it? Do you have any evidence it doesn't work? have you TRIED IT?

Reverend, if this is going to upset your lunch, just skip the thread!

I ran a Kumho Ecsta Runflat on my 2008 Goldwing. Absolutley loved it. I put close to 9,000 miles at 32-34 psi and the tire still looked new. Tread wear was great. We ran the Dragon with it in fall of '08 and the beautiful roads of Colorado in spring of '09. Million Dollar Highway and Pike Peak. Never an issue. Did not effect gas mileage. I had alot of double takes and people shaking their heads. You know the "crash and burn" thing. I havent really did any research about putting one on my Ultra but who knows. You do lose a little of that "motorcycle feel" in the corners but you get use to it. It will also follow grooves in the road more than a MC tire. We felt safe at every turn. I even ran the Dragon solo without mama on the back at a little faster pace and had no issues. Research Yellow Wolf on the gl1800 forum. He is a monter on the Dragon who also runs a car tire. My insurance co. also said as long as it's DOT approved and proper tread depth there is nothing they can say.

That is where I got the idea about putting a car tire on my bike. I hung around the GL1800 forum and read all I could about it. Tons of Gold Wingers running different car tires and not a single accident or failure, that I could find. At the time, I was about to seal my spoked wheels because I wanted to run tubeless wide whitewalls, but instead, I hit a wall, lol. I started reading about it, and it changed my perspective on it, now I am not going back.
IMHO, the Wingers and the BMW riders are the ones that put the most miles in their bikes, and I was pretty much speechless when I found out that so many run car tires.
I have no idea how many in numbers, and I don't know if anyone there is keeping statistics, but a simple visit to the GL1800 forum is an eye opener.

Heheheh ... you and "the rev" are just jealous you can't run a CT on your bikes. Oh well. Sucks to be you ...

I'm glad you guys will never know what you're missing. You would never appreciate it anyway.

It doesn't make a difference if you believe it or not. It works, period.

You lost all credibility with me, trying to purchase a used tire with a nail hole in it on that other thread. Now I think that when they were giving out neurons, you got there late, lol.

My buddy put a car tire on his Honda Valkyrie about 6 months ago and no problems. He rides really hard and loves it. He did say turning feels different but you get use to it.
 
Thanks for posting my video. The tire is at 31psi and I run it at 35 I was just tring it out lower when I did the video. Have over 12K miles on the tire after the video and still looks and feels great. I ride in the mountains and in town and on some roads a CT sucks about 5% bad and 95% good but it is more of a feel. Do your research and if it is not right for you stay with the MC tire. I run over 12K miles a year and that is 1 1/2+ MC tires a year for me and no cost is part of it the other part is having to think if I need to change my tire out or can I get another 500 miles before I change it out.

On my 06 Softail I ran the original Dunlop tire for 6100 mi. Had to replace it and put a Metzler on.That tire lasted for 4200 mi. At that point I was reading about car tires being used and found one that fit. I believe it was 195/70/R16 Falcon. What I found is the tire had great traction, handled well and I was never worried about it. The handling did change slightly and I was able to adjust for it.

One thing I notice about the MC tire is if it is worn flat in the middle from straight up cruising, it feels like the car tire would. Not bad but different. With new tires on the bike that are made for it I think the handling is great. But as those cycle tires wear it begins to handle like a car tire on the bike provided that it is wearing flat in the center of the tread.

I ran 32 psi in mine and felt this was the best pressure. I wasn't worried about the money I had to pay for cycle tires, I wanted longer wear for the money spent. I now have a 09 SG and still running original tires and the back is wearing flat in the center and feels like my 06 ST did when it had car tire on the back.

When this tire is in need of replacement I will be looking for a car tire replacement. I did run a car tire and had absolutely no worries! But I still like the handling effect of a motorcycle tire but sure like the longer wear life of the car tire.

So if you do the math the cost savings are incredible. The rear cycle tire cost me 260.00 and averaged 5000 miles and then needed replacement. A car tire can go 30k or more before replacement. So to get the same mileage out of 6 motorcycle tires cost 1560.00 and I picked up 1 car tire for under 100.00 bucks. Over 1400.00 dollars difference for the same mileage. I do my own work so if someone is installing your tires you would save the labor also.

I'm not saying everyone should do it but with these kind of results it is hard to ignore!
