Car tire on my Road King

The quiet one

New member
I read somewhere that the difference in the lateral load capacity in a radial and a bias ply tire is the main difference and would addect the handling on a 4 wheeled vehicle or a trailer if mixed but if trailing in line would have little to no affect. I have run mixed ...bias and radials with no adverse effects yet and rode hard in the twisties....

In all the answers about Naysayers i see the word "Can Happen" all the instances can and have happen with motorcycle tires for years and i am not for a minute advocating the use of any products that would be dangerous but i don't see any problem with using a product that has been used for years and years with little to no adverse effects...Obviously the "Darksiders" are ecstatic about hte results of doing this. I also doubt that anybody using a C/T on a bike is riding at the limits of the tire or at the level of a road racer.
I am also pretty sure that if you ask any Motorcyle tire engineer about the subject they will surely tell you that it is not recommended because they design the actual products.
I also don't believe that anybody on here has any problems running M/C tires on a bike , it's just the mileage issue....to be sure they could develop a tire that can last longer than 6k-12k miles with all the technology available.

I didn't do this to save money. I didn't do it without researching and looking at actual tire mounts in other bikes. I did it because I hated the ride with my D407 and D407F/D408F, and realizing that there are not many choices, we are very much a captive audience for Dunlop/Moco with these special sizes and exclusive manufacturing contracts.

The savings in hard earned cash are just the icing on the cake. What really matters to me is the improved ride, the INSANE traction, in a straight line and in the curves, and reduced stopping distances. The ABS works great with it. The load capacity is raised several notches.

My friend rides an older Gold Wing with a CT in the back and a BIAS Dunlop E3 in the front with no issues, and over in the DarkSide some folks run Bias in front, others run radials, with no problems. This doesn't seem to make a difference.

I am now working on finding my "sweet spot" which is experimenting with different pressures to find the best ride. Most people with tires similar to mine find 28 to 30 PSI ideal.

Folks, judging from the positive reactions, soon we will need a separate section for Darksiders, lol.

Regards,

Roberto,

Since you've done your homework, are there CTs that are more rounded than others? Which ones?
If I was to switch, I think I'd look for top of the line CTs and Michelin and GoodYear would be 2 of them. I have Michelins on my cars and they're excellent tires. Not the cheapest but you get what you pay for.
I've seen lots of guys praising General Altimax for their bike, do you know why? I wouldn't consider them for my cars, let alone for my bike. Am I missing something?

he says 'he wouldn't dream of doing it'.... you give his qualifications, say that you run all your tire questions through him. you obviously value and respect his input. but then you go on to say that you are gonna do it for yourself......

i bet you had to touch the stove yourself after your mom already told you it was hot too.....

Too Easy
I have been reading what is bing said and yes i have a 2009 ultra. i have also been and am a member of the darksiders. i will be going this way next year that is because i am still learning this bike and only have 8500 miles on my bike. last night i recieved my hitch for this bike and over the next two weeks i will be experimenting with my trailer that i towed with my other bike. please keep me informed on how the car tire works. when i changed to the darkside with my other bike i did a lot of research
Thank you
Bryan

Not tryin to JaK this thread.Just offerin a different route/choice!
I agree,I did not like the way the 407/408 stock Dunlops ride or handle. So,I set out to find a better tyre that performs & rides better. My answer:RADIALS.They last longer, ride much smoother & grip like a gorilla.I am running a 140 75 17R(newer HD FatBoy Radial) on the front & a 180 60 16R E3 on the rear(Goldwing Radial)on my 2010 FLHTK.LUV EM!Regards,Tom ps:The rear E3 is 1 inch shorter & helps some with the tall gearing, the front tire is almost spot on except it is wider & fills the fender better, looks real nice.

I did the research. I do value his opininion but I have to try it for myself in order to learn and form my own opinion. He has not done it himself and is relying on others who have not done it themselves.

It is the only way I will know.

Would you mind posting a pic of your 140/75-17 on the front or email it to me? [email protected]
I think I'm stuck for the time being with a 130 on the front cause I'm having my 407F replaced today by a 408F, under the Moco Service Bulletin. I don't think I can ask the dealer to mount a different tire for free but I'll try.

Thanks
