Car tire on my Road King

Here is comparsion videos between a CT and MC tire on the rear of a Valkyrie. Same motorcycle same road. Other than the shape of the tire it is difficult to tell the difference. The contact patch area of the CT appears to be the same if not more than the MC Tire.

Frenchie,
Yes if I can find a tire that will fit the rear of my 07 Ultra Classic. If I had an 09 Ultra like you do. It would already have a 195mm car tire on the rear of it. The thing about it, no rider with a Car Tire on the rear of a touring series HD is ever going to get the bike leaned over far enough to get on the side wall of the tire. I have never even seen the chicken strips worn off an touring series HD tire. Hard parts will drag a long time before the lean angle is steep enough.

David,

Very interesting vids and great comparo. I didn't see much difference either and I noticed that the CT was inflated at 40psi which, by all accounts, is too much. I bet with 32 or 34psi, the contact patch would even be wider. Hmmm ...........

I'm not sure there are any references, I clicked on the link that post was copied from and read it there, the author asked some one to take a ride with him, to do the side by side testing, he never mentioned that that compairison took place.

My final thought on this whole thing is this. It's your bike........do what you like! Heck, I don't care if you put an old bicycle tire on your motorcycle . I'll stick with motorcycle tires, but that's just me.

It's been an interesting thread with lots of excellent data and videos but I'm going to stick with motorcycle tires. My philosophy is to "hope for the best but plan for the worst" and if I ever have to perform an emergency maneuver I don't want the tire to be the weak link. I could go 50k miles and never have to make an emergency move but it has happened to me before and my tires performed admirably. It could even be something as simple as entering a curve a little too fast and you have to lean a little more than usual. I personally want the security of a tire that has been designed for motorcycle use and I'm willing to pay extra for it if necessary.

I hear you but do you have ABS brakes on your bike? If you don't, your tires won't be the "weak link" in case of emergency braking. This being said, I think a car tire provides better grip (softer compound) and wider contact patch, both of which should reduce braking distances.

First thing, Thank you for your service TooEasy.. I wish I could sit down and have a beer and talk with you. I'm a vet. myself. I'm 68 now and retired (not from the Military) I Have rode and raced bikes since I was 25 yrs old. Now I'm in enjoy mode. I love to ride these Beautiful Mtns here in TN. Your Thread is very interesting indeed, But until I do more research, I will stick to Motorcycle tires. I just got off the phone with my Insurance guy (Allstate) He said the subject hasn't come up yet with using CT on MC's. He has clients doing it and swear by them. Thanks for taking your time to post all this info. I am subscribed!
