Car tire on my Road King

MEE TOO...if i could fit one on my 07 it would be on there...Buddy of mine just came back from Nova Scotia 5200 mile trip and he said SweEEt ride ..it is a Goldwing and he has 20k miles on it now...still has about 10k left he thinks....

It's an interesting thought exercise. I can see the car tire doing much, much better than a motorcycle tire for touring and highway riding. I'm concerned though at how it would handle the stress of serious backroad riding. I'm on pace to run through at least 3 rear tires this year. I'd be very interested in something that would allow me to change tires just once, assuming it'll stand up to the punishment I dish out, and it'll give me the traction I need.

I would consider putting a car tire on the back of my bike to try it out in very controlled riding but I don't even think that anyone makes a car tire that will fit the stock rear rim on my '09 Street Bob and still give me belt/swingarm clearance I need so I guess there's no need for me to consider trying it.

Graham,

Like I said before, I didn't understand it until I tried it. And I still don't fully understand it, but I am enjoying the hell out of it. Now I can corner waaaaaay faster than before and the bike is rock solid. I can even change my line in the middle of a turn without the bike loosing composure.

One more thing: I could kick myself in the behind for not doing this sooner, and putting up with the horrendous ride from the D407.

Regards,

heh heh
I was wondering if anyone would notice that. I'd never hear the end of it from my friends if I put a car tire on the back of my bike but I'm getting less than 4K miles out of each of my back tires and I have to admit that the idea of getting 20K plus miles out of a back tire is very appealing. But I do *love* to tear up the twisties and it would be hard for anyone to convince me that I'd be able to make the bike perform as well with a car tire as I can with a motrocycle tire... But I guess it wouldn't hurt to try (hopefully) on the backroads in very controlled situation... hmm... But seriously, I can't find a tire that fits my rim and haven't seen anyone with a bike like mine say they've done the rear car tire so I guess it doesn't matter. I have a new Metzler being delivered TODAY to my house that I'm going to have put on before making a long trip later this week. Only have about 3K on the tire that I'm going to replace but I'm positive it would go bad on me during the course of this trip so I have to go ahead and replace it. grrrr... $165 per tire gets expensive when you're putting 3-4 of them a year.

Watch guy,

That doesn't make sense. Gold Wings are very expensive and most of their owners are very meticulous, like my friend. Do you really think there would be all these guys running around with no insurance? And we read very regularly about accidents, when was the last time you read about an accident caused by a car tire?

Regards,

I would be willing to bet you that if you had an accident with a car tire on your motorcycle, and the insurance company found out you were running a car tire on your bike, that they would refuse to insure you, or pay for your claim. Before I'd put a car tire on my bike, I'd check that with my insurance company.

Folks,

I only have a couple hundred miles on the tire. Braking is better, and my ABS works very well with it, stopping on rippled pavement used to cause my D407 to chatter up and down, not anymore. Traction is insane, in a corner or in a straight line it couldn't be approached by my old D407, or the Michelins and Bridgestones I used to run when I had Metric bikes. I can't wait to try it in the rain, lol.

This is not for everybody. You can look for thousands of reasons why you wouldn't do it, but in the end, you may be in the same position I was in, I had no idea what I was missing until I tried it. On the other hand, Its not my job to convince you of anything. If I posted this, its because there are a lot of other riders out there interested in doing this change.

Somebody else posted this link here before, I just read it last night and it makes some very good reading:
