car slows down when i turn on the air?

I have a 2001 Pt Cruiser it is 5 speed. It runs great but when i turn on the air conditioning it slows down and besided that the brakes smell really bad and get really heat up all the way to the rim. what could this be?
 
the a/c is normal cars are always a little more sluggish when they have the a/c running it takes power to run the compressor and enough for you to notice it, as far as the brakes go you may have a brake hanging up causing heat or your rotors are down there far enough that they are no dissipating heat good, you may be due for a set of rotors
