Car rims? What are the FOR?

I mean do car rims contribute to extra performance to the Auto-mobile or are they just on the whell to look good?
is it like shoes for cars?
cause im getting a car and i have to know!
 
Performance wise, lighter wheels have less rotating mass, meaning the engine doesn't have to work as hard.

Aesthetically, they should be appealing to the human eye.

Finally, if you didn't have wheels, lets just say your car wouldn't move (obviously).
