the car in any gear? I just had my 94 gmc jimmy worked on and the guy told me that I could start the vehicle in any gear. I didn't think to ask him what that meant. He also said that I have a vacuum leak. What damage can that do to the vehicle. Thanks
Does it mean my trainny is going? Do you know is it expensive to fix?

The transmission linkage Park / Neutral lockout switch is bad. This is a safety issue.

This means that the vehicle can be started in gear. So if you forget to put the vehicle into park, when you start the engine, the vehicle will lurch either forward or backwards depending on which gear ithe transmission is in.

If this is unexpected you can hit something or someone. You could cause injury to another. You could cause property damage. If you don't have this repaired this is a risk that you take. You would be held responsible for any injury or property damages.

As for the vacuum leak, this will effect how well the engine runs. The engine management computer will compensate to a certain extent. However you risk doing some major engine damage in the way of a burned valve or piston.

At the very least, your fuel efficiency and power are decreased. And a Jimmy doesn't get very good fuel mileage to begin with.
