I have a chevy impala 2001 and it has got 116K miles. Two weeks ago while visiting a friend 20 miles away, it died on the road. It was towed to the nearest repair shop and fixed. The diagnosis was that the serpentine belt tensioner was broken and the serpentine belt had come off. The mechanic fixed it. Total cost came to $ 560. I have a powertrain warranty on it. It was a huge hassle dealing with the mechanic and the warranty company because the mechanic reported to the warranty company gasket repair and other stuff -which were lies. So the warranty company refused to pay. I ended up paying out of pocket. Now two weeks later the car died on me while I was driving to work. I called the mechanic who repaired it, and he said it could be something different, but if it was the same problem from earlier, he would fix it. The problem is, the car starts and goes a few yards( 100 or so) and then dies. I cheked the serpentine belt and it is fine. My question is:
Could it be a different problem, if so, what is it?
Should I take it to the first mechanic or to a different one? ( He is 20 miles away-consider towing fees)
Is the first mechanic responsible for the repairs? Even if it turns out it is a different but related problem?(after all he should have diagnosed it earlier too)
sorry for the long post, THANKS FOR READING
