Car keeps stalling what could be the problem??????

Hello, all I have a 1997 Kia sephia that has 151000 miles on it. I am starting to have problems with it when I brake. It is a stick shift so when I am about to turn into an entrance or even stop for a red light it starts to struggle- like stall. I then have to rub the engine in order for it to not shut off. It has done this when I have beem going speeds up to 50mph. It is starting to scare me since the car will stop and the power steering will go off of course due to the car being off-- which makes it harder to turn on the side of the road so I can come to a complete stop and start it again. What could be the problem? I am getting a little worried since I have a child in my car most of the time and am actually getting scared to even go on the free way with this car. Anyone have an idea on why it is doing this? I have been thinking about getting a new car for sometime now is now a good time?
