Car increases speed and RPM without accelerator being pressed?

I have a Ford Taurus 2005 106xxx. Since a last few months I have noticed that the car increases in speed & RPM automatically (without pressing the accelerator) 45 minutes or so into a long drive ( I guess when it gets somewhat heated up). I generally drive for less than 30 minutes within the city and do not notice this problem. Can someone tell me what the problem could be .
