car help only people who know about them please?

ok well my battery died completely and now my dad said if we give it a charge we need to reset it by going fast speeds for about a mile is this even safe hes a cluts so i dont take him seriously because things like to mess up when he "Fixes" them. so should i listen to this advice or will my car just mess up even more
