car hand brake not working?

i was stupidly running with the hand brake on and its not working anymore but the foot brakes are fine, are the handbrake and footbrkares two different system or handbrake connected to foot brkaes? cos if its connected i just need to adjust it, dont i?

1. The shoes must have worn out and hence not responding.
2. Makes vary, so check with your mechanic if the hand/foot brakes are connected in your car.
3. Replace the handbrake shoes (depends on how long you have driven. Adjustments would be fine if you drove very short distance).
