Car died, doesnt start on the first try sometimes?

my car died today, this is the second time since ive had the car. sometimes is doesnt start on the first couple tries then it gets going when i oush the gas pedal some. the check engine light is on. when the car died today, it started up again but then died again. someone jumped my car, but it felt like it was going to die again but it didnt. i cant really explain what its doing, when i was driving it, it kind of seems like it would die for like a secon and come back. i dont know if that makes sense or not...its a 1996 oldsmobile cutless
 
Start with the fuel filter
have the alternator check
load test the battery
put gas in it
change the oil
