can't taste or smell... wont eat!!

someone help..my mother who is 79 cannot taste or smell no more,she just about stopped eating all together....she gets frustrated cuz nothing taste good and has a hard time eating period.....I told her I was going to post this and see what kind of help I can find...or any suggestions, shes been tested and the results is just plain old age....while we lose our hearing some lose there taste and smell.......can anyone help during a very difficult time..
 
hello Lynn...she has a few doctor appointments coming up.....I told her she must sternly tell them how you feel....and how somethings taste to her.(like meat tasting like card board).....a metellic taste also.....which yu would think would be drug related....she does take a few meRAB....one that COULD give her no taste....we'll have to push the issue this time around.....shes already lost 12 lbs........the doctors just dont seem to think this is serious.....is this the end??????????.....thanks lynn

This may differ a bit from what your mom is going through but may help a bit. A couple of years ago I was dealing with a really bad sinus/throat infection and lost my appetite because I couldn't smell, not only that my throat stayed extremely sore. The thing that got me through was Ensure and Carnation Instant Breakfast.


She may not want to drink it but she neeRAB some nurishment in her body. I ended up in the hospital in a Magnesium/Potassium drip, so she wants to avoid that at all costs.

Have you spoken with her doctor to let them know what's going on?

Did her doctor send her for an MRI of the brain yet?
If not, you can ask at her next appointment.
 
thanks michelle.........been there and done all of that.......in fact she just got out of hospital ...dehydration.......the doc says its just old age.....it sad to see her try so hard to eat....everything taste awful...especially meat.....she also had test after test....shes pretty darn healthy.......but how long can she go on like this ....thanks again,sandy
 
she just told me this last nite......that a friend of hers lost her sense of smell and taste and got it back after TEN YEARS!!!!!!!!...scheesh at 79 I just dont know!!!!!LOL...........thanks lynn
 
Did your mother took any medicine prior of losing her taste or smell?
I had a bad cold one time and took sinus headache pill and nasal spray.
After that I loss my sense of smell. ENT doctor told me that unfortunately I won't be able to get my sense of smell back and I was still lucky because some people loss both sense of smell and taste. He couldn't explain why but I suspect it was from the sinus medication. I was very frustated but one day I read an article in a magazine that a woman got her sense of smell back. I was so happy and I got hope. After one year, gradually I got my sense of smell back.
Tell your mother about this, maybe she will get her sense of smell and taste back too. (but check her medication incase there is a side effect from it)
 
It doesn't mean that it will take her ten yrs to get her sense of smell and taste back. She might get it back in one year like me.
Just watch her medication and search online (or ask the Pharmacist) for the side effects everytime the doctor give her a new one.
