Can't take my 04 Honda accord out of park?

I knw how to take it out with the side bottom pushing it down but I need to know what could cause this it just started happening a few days ago. There is no problem with the trans I just drained all the fluid and put new in it and the brake lights are working fine. But I can't get my gear button to go in so that I can come out of park. Once again I can do it with the button that's under the cover you pop up but I'd like to know what could cause this so I can replace it
