Cant stop Smoking

hmm....

ok, i kinda took up "social smoking" about half a year ago, i have never bought any cigerettes, and i have been trying too make myself stop smoking for a little while, but everytime i see a friend smoking, or even a friend with cigarettes i just ask for one. I dont think i am addicted, thoe it is feasable, i dont crave them at all when i am alone, it's jsut when i am with friends smoking i cant help myself.

I have tried quitting many times before, i went about a month without doing it, but then i went too a party, got drunk, and had one.

My girlfriend doesnt approve, and i have tried mentally using this as an excuse but i just cant help myself at all, my parents dont have a clue i smoke, and i am generally a very athletic person, i havent really noticed much difference in my fitness, but i know i have too stop doing this.

Would any body be able too help me? maybe if you have had a similar problem, or know someone with a similar problem.

As far as i am concerned if you can go more than 24 hour without a ciggy your not addicted, stay away from the triggers, i.e drinking, speak to your doctor, buy patches....stop now. its something that if you kick early its easlier! trust me i know!!!!!!!!

OK here is my 5cents worth of free advice. I started when I was 21. I thought I was a social smoker. I just recently quit smoking after years of being addicted. I had to 1) admit to my self that i was addicted to cig's 2) really have the desire of quitting 3) use a patch for a few weeks. From there it has been an act of will power at times as i refuse to quit drinking (major trigger) or quit playing video games (almost as bad as drinking). You got to want it. Really want it. Then just do it.

I have the exact same problem as you. When I'm at a bar after work or hanging out with friends I definately need to smoke something in order to feel at ease. It just goes well with the beer and gives you one hell of a buzz. I havn't had a cig in about 2 weeks now and, to be honest, I can't tell any difference in my well being now as compared to the middle of July when I averaged a pack every two weeks.

This doesn't necessarily mean I'm not glad for having apparently quit smoking. I'll probably just thank myself later, in my 50's, when my friends start dropping like flies.

I stop smoking for two hour intervals 14 hours per day, but thats only cuz they wont let me smoke at my desk and hurt the "sensitive" coworkers.

Social smoking is pretty normal. Carry a pack of gum with you and pop one of those instead of a cig.

Gum helps. That whole oral thing... as for health. I was at 1 pack or so a day. Within a few weeks I have been able to see drastic increases in lung compasity, overall stamina increase when PT'ing and have finally rid my self of a presistant cough. That is in a few weeks. I can only imagine what the long term benifits will be. But if you decide to not quit then all the power to you smoke one for me.

If only I had the willpower I would love to quit. I've tried so many times but stress gets to me and since I'm in a customer service position it pays not to be pissed off.

The difficulty with quitting smoking is not the actual addiction, it's the habit. As smokers we are used to picking up a cigarette at certain times like after meals or driving or while drinking. It's the habit we have to learn to break.

You have to find the way that works for you:

1) Try curbing your smoking by changing when you smoke. If you have a cigarette in the morning, skip that cigarette, etc.
2) Substitute it with something else like carrots or gum or whatever. Just be careful, 'cause you're bound to gain some weight regardless and you don't want to substitute with something too fatty.
3) For the first month, don't go out as much, it will lessen the urge to smoke.
4) Exercise.

You get rid of the nicotine urge within 72 hours, the rest is breaking a habit. Usually during the second week the smell of cigarettes make you nauseous, by the 3rd or 4th week you crave the smell, that's when you see all the noob quitters hanging out by ash trays or by smokes inhaling 2nd hand smoke like crazy.

i have the same problem. im currently trying to quit now. its been 2 days. i only smoke when im stressed, fucked up, or friends are around. right now ims tressed so i kinda what a cigarette, but if i relax i can go for weeks and weeks without smoking and then ill have one of those stressed days and pick up a cigarette. good luck because im having the same issues.

The best way to avoid these problems.. is just not to start in the first place. I don't smoke, but I think I'm just lucky my friends don't smoke, because if they did... I'd probably be a smoke addict too. :thumbsdn:
