Can't sleep on my side

I had L4-L5 decompression/laminectomy/discectomy surgery a week ago, and I now can't sleep on my side as I always have done. When I do, I wake up a couple hours later with my legs completely nurab and severe pain in my lower back shooting into my hips. I have a really good quality mattress so that shouldn't be the problem.

I now have to sleep on my back and am having difficulty getting a good night's rest. Since the surgery I wake up a couple of times anyways in pain and have to take Percoset to go back to sleep.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so, will I be able to sleep on my side again after more healing has occurred? I find that I am now dreading nights when I have to go to bed.

Do you sleep with a pillow between your knees so that the line of your top hip is level with your shoulder? Sometimes you need to experiment with a variety of sizes and shapes of pillows to find the position that is good for you. Sometimes people have a pillow between the legs and another one kind of propping up the stomach/chest area--like if you were giving a pillow a hug.

I have not had surgery, but have 4 herniated discs.
And I sleep on my side with a king size pillow between my legs, and yes hugging the pillow. It gives me a lot of support, and I find it very comfortable.
I hope you find a good position soon, sleep in so important for healing.
