Can't get the back hatch on my Jeep Cherokee 1995 to open?

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 1995 and the back hatch has gotten stuck. The handle goes up and down but there is no tension. I'm guessing a connection has come loose. The problem is that i can't remove the interior panel because the screws are located in places that the hatch has to be open to be accessible. LOVELY DESIGN I KNOW! i can get out enough to jam my arm down there. I've felt around for a lever and such but can't find it..so far i've only succeeded in scratching the skin off my arm and busting up my hand. Any suggestions would be great
 
i think this was a common problem with this year there is a spring in the latch that that has come out of place and isnt letting the latch to open we looked at junk yards for one but couldnt find one so we drilled the rivets out of the latch and fixed the problem. we had to cut a hole in the bottom of the panel and pry the latch open
