Canon XL1 vs. Panasonic DVX100 series?

I am looking to spend about $1000 on a used camcorder and these cameras are all about the same price range. Which one should I get, Canon XL1, Panasonic DVX100a or DVX100b? I will be zooming in pretty far to film surfing and I think the XL1 has that big lens which might be better quality zoomed way in than the Panasonics. Which should I get??
