Cannot detect Wi-Fi network

Can anyone help me with this?

I have a G1 with no SIM card (it's my old phone) but I love the Google Sat Nav on it, so I wanted to wirelessly tether it to my iPhone so when in the car I can use my iPhone as my phone and it can play music videos for any journey for the wife to watch and the G1 can be used as sat nav using the iPhones data connection.

When I set up wifi tethering on the iPhone it can be seen by other phones and PC's etc but cannot be seen my my G1, a colleagues G1, my brothers Magic or my other brothers Hero.
I've tried different channels and with and without WEP.

When I used to use my G1 I set up wireless tethering on that and noticed no other android devices could see it.

What do I need to change in any settings to see the iPhone?
the G1 picks up other wifi hotspots, just not ones on phones for some reason.
 
I believe this is because tethered phones usually announce themselves as an ad-hoc connection (single device to single device), rather than an infrastructure connection (single wireless access point that lots of devices can connect to).

Android does not normally support ad-hoc connections, as they are extremely insecure and really from a security perspective there's no excuse for using them, so that's probably why you can't see your iPhone.

Some custom ROMs (I believe Cyanogens Mod, for example, but someone who actually runs it should confirm this) can support ad-hoc mode. Also, if your phone is rooted there are some files you can edit to force a connection.
