Can your location be tracked via cellphone?

there are many ways to track you by your cell phone.....

by the carrier tower signals...( it will be only an approximate location )

by navigational power of GPS system...( your phone should contain this facility )

by asking your intimate friend who has the logical imagination of your current location.. (Hercule Poirot way of finding things...haha)
 
If i were to 'run away', would the police be able to track me via my Droid X cellphone? I'm not actually planning on running away, I just daydream about what it would be like to take off one day and lead a gypsy-esque life for a month or two of traveling and thought up this possible roadblock of "epic fail" proportions. And actually, to specify something, I wouldn't actually be running away because I am 18 years of age, and therefore can do what i want. So please, if you're going to respond with a fake answer to discourage me from a HYPOTHETICAL course of action, or you are going to comment on how I "Shouldn't do such a thing". Save your energy and don't even touch the keyboard, because i won't be reading such responses. Thank you for your time, good day!
Oh, and I would have to cellphone in airplane mode most of the time. and when not in airplane mode it would only be used:
For calls: limited to 1 minute
For texts: Until sent
For maps: until target location and route is found
and then put back on airplane mode.
(I'm a planner, I think of almost everything, even if the situation in mind isn't going to happen)
