Can you use the hard drive from a xbox 360 arcade for an xbox 360 elite?

i want to buy a 20gb or 50gb hard drive but i can see it is white. i check where i put the hard drive at in my elite and it didn't look like it would fit. So is is Possible it will work like that?
Also can i play original xbox games if i have it?
