Can you use muslin for painting?

I have yards and yards of muslin at my disposal and instead of buying canvas i was wondering if i could use muslin instead. I would be using stretcher bars and gessoing it as well... but will it dry rot? Or tear? Is there anything special I should spray on it so it would be stronger?

PS I use oil and acrylic.
