Can you use an iphone for a regular ATT plan?

I mean, I have an old phone with a plan from ATT that has only minutes(no text, web whatnot), and i know with the iphone the thrill is all about the 3g etc...but can i simply buy an iphone and then use my old SIM card, and use my old plan, without having to pay the extra smart-phone plan fees?
