can you use a unlocked phone during or within a contract?

im thinking of buying an unlocked phone but my contract is still not done
im doing the 2 year conract and i have like an year left
im in japan and using docomo
phone is in the smart series t-01b dyna pocket
i heard you only need to put in uim or foma card but will it work in my situation
