You can use a Sprint/Nextel phone on a basic plan, but it must not be a smart phone. A Blackberry is considered a smart phone and requires you to be on a data plan to use it. It is pretty much automatic, when you go to activate it, it will be flagged in the system, and they will tell you that you have to change your rate plan to include the data services.
