Can you use a Netgear wireless router as a repeater for a Linksys base wireless router?

I'm sorry if this question seems stupid to any of you but I am a little technologically challenged so bear with me ha ha ha. Up until two days ago, i had a Netgear WNR1000 wireless router but i decided i wanted a better one so i bought a Linksys E2000 wireless router. My problem is that the router is two floors above me connected to our home pc via ethernet cable, and i am at the complete opposite end of the house. I recently found out that you can use another wireless router as a repeater to extend the signal of the internet from the base router. What i wanted to know is if i can use my old netgear router as a repeater, and if so, can it be set up in my room and connect to the linksys router wirelessly or does it HAVE to be connected to the base with an ethernet cable?
