Can you suggest some good science fiction/fantasy books?

There is a really tremendous trilogy known as the Gormenghast Trilogy by Mervyn Peake. I believe the three titles in the trilogy are: Titus Goan; Gormenghast; and Titus Alone. Originally written in the late 1930s I believe and still available from Penguin Books. In second hand stores you can find the volumes individually but there is also a large paperback edition containing all three.

For fantasy, I suggest Tamora Pierce - too many books to list here, but her website is listed below. 'Song Of The Lioness' is the first complete series.
I also recommend 'The Unexpected Dragon': 'Pigs Don't Fly', 'Master of Many Treasures' and 'Dragonne's Eg' by Mary Brown.
'The Prydain Chronicles': The Book of Three, 'The Black Cauldron', 'The Castle of Llyr', 'Taran Wanderer' and 'The High King'

Marion Zimmer Bradley's Avalon series - there are more than 3, but there are three core works:

The Forest House
The Mists of Avalon
The Lady of Avalon

If you're younger, Christopher Pike is excellent in both categories.
