Can you sign up an Iphone on 1 year or 2 year contract?

Every server provider I see (Rogers, Telus, Bell, etc) all their prices are based on 3 year contracts. What if I only want a 1 or 2 year contract? or what If I buy the iphone off someone who has no contract & sign up for a 1 year contract? Can I do that or does it have to be 3 year contract or prepaid?
