Can you score more than 3 runs in Cricket without a boundary?

Are teams allowed to run for more than 3 runs when they hit a ball? I'm not talking about a boundary (4 or 6), I mean when the ball stays in play. Can the batsmen run between the wickets for 4, or are they allowed a maximum of 3?
Thanks for the quick answers! I've only been watching Cricket for a couple years, and I've yet to see a team run for more than 3 at once, even on an overthrow. I'm guessing it's just not worth the risk to run for a 4th (or more ) unless it's a sure thing, but it's nice to know it can be done!
