can you remove paint from a metal slide on an airsoft gun?

in the UK, to purchase an airsoft gun, you need to be registered with UKARA, or you need to have half of the gun painted a bright colour to make it unrealistic. if i recieved a gun with a metal slide and the slide was painted, could i use accetone to remove the paint? i will/would not be using this illegaly i just like my guns to look realistic. also, if it helps, i got the idea from when people from the US use accetone to remove orange paint from the barrels of airsoft guns. would it be the same paint? thanks.
 
Be aware that modifying an unrealistic imitation to look realistic is considered by the law as manufacturing a realistic imitation (and is mentioned specifically in the Violent Crime Reduction Act). This would be just as illegal as selling or importing a RIF.

If you're legally entitled to a defence or exemption to the act, then you can legally modify the gun.

Acetone may remove the paint depending on the type of paint that was used. It would also likely remove the original finish form the slide.
