can you remount an exisitng tire on a new rim?

thinking about new wheels for my bike...and i am leaning toward keeping the same size in the rear... i know, i know, everyone says thats strange.. but i don't much care for the 18" rear... for some reason to me it makes the bike look higher... anyway, that being said i was wondering if i can remount my tire on a new wheel. I would think i could but i remember hearing a guy at dealer saying you can't do this (i'm thinking he was trying to sell a tire)
my front tire will most likely be upgraded to a 19" so i will need a new one up front.
My bike only has about 3,500 miles so there is a decent amount of life left in the back tire...if i can keep it.

Yes you can dismount and remount the tire on a new rim (giving the rim is the same diameter and correct width to accomidate the tire), they are not one time mount. Just like the tires on your car.
 
Maybe they are worried about putting a little blem on your old tire. Then they would have to buy you a new one. Some dealerships and even Indys wont mount a tire you bought somewhere else. An Indy here won't, says it is a liability issue for him, but the dealership will do it.
 
No way! You see the tire was used to the way the old rim rolled and "broke in" under the old rims specular instanicks. Because of this the old tire will "reject" the new rim and can cause intense coalation differment on the finigribum. I know this all sounds very technical, however it is the reason the dealer recommends a new tire. I personally wouldn't want to risk something as severe as intense coalation differment, or an even mild version of it. You must make up your own mind but just remember this is total bullsh.t!. Of course you can!
