Can You Recommend A Good Traveler's Backpack?

Going to Thailand in Dec and I'm thinking of carrying a large backpack rather than my large 26" suitcase. Or should I just bring my suitcase? I plan to move around a bit going from Bangkok to Phuket to Chiang Mai and maybe even visit an island!
 
If you live near one, REI is the best place for any of your backpacking needs. The staff there are always knowledgeable and friendly, not to mention there's all sorts of neat stuff you can take with you on your trip. I would highly recommend the silk cocoon bag. If you're going from hostel to hostel, it might be cleaner to sleep in the cocoon over the bed sheets....you never know how clean those things really are.
