can you put two male beta fish in a tank together?

Absolutely not, you shouldn't even put them in two different tanks where they can still see each other. They will ram their head on the glass until they die. A male should be fine with a female though, otherwise how would they mate. I had a beta that lived 10 years. Usually their max life span is only like 1 year, and yes I'm positive it was a beta.
 
I have always heard that you never put two males together because one will wind up killing the other. As far as one of each, I think you can, but I don't think you are to leave them in there to stay. My cousin has 18 beta fish and they are all in their own little bowls. She has never put two of the fish together.
 
No you cannot put 2 male bettas together. They will fight until one dies because they are very territorial creatures. They're called 'Siamese Fighting Fish' for a reason :)

You can put a female and male together if you want them to lay eggs, they may also fight once in a while and the male may end up killing her.

Or you can get a tank divider and make it into two tanks and put one betta in each side. Just make sure that you have a 10 gallon tank or larger because anything else is too small.
