Can you put an engine from a front wheel drive car into one that is rear wheel drive?

I'm not doing any engine swaps myself, this is just out of curiosity. I've just started learning about cars in an introductory mechanics class at my local community college, and I know that on front wheel drives the engine is transversely mounted, vs. the longitudinal set up of a rear wheel drive. Can you put the engine from one into the other car?
