Can you put alcohol in your checked baggage?

I am going from Alberta to Ontario (18 in AB and 19 in ONT for drinking age) for my friends birthday and it is BYOB (I am the youngest of my friends {i'm turning 19 after the party}) so I need to bring a bottle! If I but it in Edmonton and put it in my checked baggage will I be fined? Or will they never find it?
