yeah, if they're both 2nd gen, than it will prob fit
From 1996 to 1999 GM did a little "tweaking" with their transmissions. But the basic transmission remained the same throughout the 90's (4l60e and 4l80e).
Your best bet would be to ask your local GMC or Chevy dealer, they would be able to tell you whether or not a 99 Tranny will work in a 96 with or without any modifications.
