The topic is "what is character and how do you show it in your life?"
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines character as, “the complex of mental and ethical traits marking and often individualizing a person, group, or nation”. For me, simply put, character is the sum and total of everything we are.
As long as I can remember I have felt empathy toward people in my life as well as the characters I have met through movies and books. Everyone is born with the ability to feel empathy, some withdraw from it, most allow themselves to be distracted from it, and some embrace it.
Bullies have withdrawn, even though they display leadership qualities, they lack the character we look for in good leaders. The average person, rather than be overwhelmed by empathy, simply engage in life as it presents itself. My empathy compels me to want to act.
The reality is there are things in life that are beyond my ability to control, but I choose to become the kind of person that does all they can. That choice is what compels me to volunteer.
While giving my time to The Natures Conservancy I help to take care of, and clean up our national parks. I believe it’s important to preserve the land so it will be here for the generations to come. At Natures Nursery I help to take care of injured wild animals until they are healthy enough to be released back into nature. My involvement with the organization FAST (families and schools together) is my commitment to help bring families together. Through volunteering in my community, I gain experience and continue to grow.
I take my high school experience very seriously, I refuse to walk away from this with just four years of schooling. Instead, these years will provide me with education, experience, and inspiration. They will be a part of my character and continue with me forever. I have the will to make high school and college the foundation for the rest of my life.
I have to give my parents credit for giving me that open minded outlook on life. Before someone can act in a more positive way, they have to change their thoughts and outlooks to a more positive view. A negative outlook makes for negative behavior. It is important to change, and focus on how you think before you can change your actions.
People tend to focus on appearances, rather than what’s within, good character overcomes that. Character is what shows people what’s inside rather than, outside. Character is the defining point of everything we are.
