can you paint over laminate cabinets?

Ok well we are trying to sell our house but our kitchen seems to be holding us back alot. Its this ugly yellow color, the counter tops are bright yellow, as long as the cabinets (not the doors they are white, but the trim and the outer sides of them are yellow). We cannot afford to reface them because we cannot afford it, we are on a very tight budget. I was wondering if there is any way to paint them, and the counter tops. Will it hold and not scratch off? and is it safe to put on the counters and set food on? How do i do this if i can? Thanks
 
I've used a product by Benjamin Moore called "Fresh Start" primer. You simply clean the surface to be painted then apply this product. It looks like ordinary paint, but it doesn't appear to cover evenly. NO PROBLEM. It wasn't meant to cover so don't worry. After it dries you can paint over it with great results. I've used it on furniture and it works wonders. I don't know about counter tops however.
