Unfortunately, there is no place where you can do this through your browser without having to pay or download something.
However, there are lots of great, free downloadable software out there. I recommend Skype- this is quite a popular software that a lot of people use. You can also send instant messages to friends in written form, without using a webcam or microphone. A great feature of Skype is that you can actually call landlines as well as use your webcam to talk to your friends online, however, calling landlines requires money. To use Skype, you need to make a Skype name, which is free and can be done after you install Skype. Go to www.skype.com to download.
Another good option is Windows Live Messenger, which is also known as MSN. Again, lots of people use it, and it is easy to use and you also have the option of sending instant messages by text as well as a webcam or microphone. Windows Live Messenger doesn't have the landline calling option though. Windows Messenger requires a Windows Live ID to use, if you have a Hotmail, Live, or XBox Live account, you can use that to sign into Windows Messenger. If you do not have one, you can create one for free.
To get Windows Live Messenger, go to http://download.live.com/?sku=messenger&wa=wsignin1.0. Windows Live Messenger also has a range of other programs you can use your Windows Live ID with, like Windows Live Mail, which is a great e-mail client, however, if you wish, you can choose to not download and install these extras.
If you want to just take a still image of yourself without having to buy or download something, go to www.cameroid.com. The website is a little bit like the Photobooth application on Macs, as well as being able to take normal pictures, you can add fun effects to your image that change the way they look without leaving your browser.
