Can you limit your Bittorrent download speed?

I have recently had a lot of problems while using bittorrent. When I download a huge file my internet keeps cutting off in the middle of the download. I just found out that my router has a limit so that only so much data can pass through at once. What I want to know is, is there a way to limit your download speed in bittorrent, and also how to view the limit on the router so I know what to set bittorrent at.
