Tolling Of The Bell
(a villanelle)

Can you hear the tolling of the bell,
whose wistful tones imprint upon the air?
A doleful bell with stories yet to tell.

A sad refrain that passes o'er the dell
in search of where a knight was laid with care.
Oh, can you hear the tolling of the bell?

It wafts a mystical and plaintive knell
among the lilacs growing sweetly there,
this doleful bell with stories yet to tell.

Upon her leaden heart it's cast a spell
that only fateful lovers ever share.
Oh, can you hear the tolling of the bell?

In tears each day she bids her love farewell
with sorrowed cries that signal her despair-
The doleful bell has stories yet to tell.

Although she knows the mournful sound so well,
its burden weighs too heavily to bear.
Can you hear the tolling of the bell,
the bell with sadder stories yet to tell?

Omission of "Oh" in the first line was deliberate because I consider the first line to be introductory, waiting for remaining lines to set the tone.
