The Battle of Gettysburg
Did you know the Confederates were winning the civil war before the battle of Gettysburg. The Confederates have been winning the war with the help of a famous leader, General Robert E. Lee. The battle of Gettysburg had the been the most bloodiest among the civil war.(Tanaka 9)
The war was mainly about the slaves freedom. When the law passed to release the slaves, the states, loyal to the Union, had accepted it, but the rest of the states ignored it as if it never existed.(Johnson 2) Carolina was one of the first states to drop out of the Union starting a chain reaction of other states dropping out too. Together the states form formed the Confederates.(Tanaka 9)
The Confederates then moved to Gettysburg from conquering the Civil War. When a confederate solider went to gather supplies, he saw the union troops and reported it back to his army.(Hart p.312-313 History Alive) The two armies fought all over Gettysburg from McPherson Ridge to Cemetery Ridge. Many confederates died during Picket’s charge. At the end of this deadly encounter, the Confederates had lost a third of their army and never managed to replace them. Now the tables had turned by the end of the battle.
The battle of Gettysburg took three, long, brutal days.(Johnson 55) On day one of the battle, the Union had an advantage because they were using repeating rifles, but that did not match the numbers of the confederates. The confederates had tried many attempts to over run the Unions, but the union had manage to push back the rebels with new supplies of reinforcement. On the second day of battle, James Longstreet’s army waited for the union to settle so they can get ready to attack. Longstreet had then sent a constant charge at the union. They soon fought at Devil’s den where lots of fatalities happen. When it seemed as if the union were about to give up, they managed to keep fighting by shifting troops to where they needed it most. The rebels had taken over Devil’s den and Wheat’s field and they manage to push the Union to Cemetery Ridge, but they forgot to take over Little Round top.(Johnson 29) On the third day, a famous attack happened .
General George E. Picket had charged his fifteen thousand soldiers at a union line on Cemetery Ridge in order to recapture what they had in the beginning of the battle. Sadly, only three hundred of Picket’s soldiers made it to the line where they surrendered and/or were killed.( Johnson 48) As the Confederates marched towards the line, they were shot dead by union soldiers behind a brick wall.(Johnson 4) Over ten thousand troops died in fifty minutes. The charge would soon be known as Picket’s charge.
The civil war was about the Unions who wanted slaves.(Tanaka 9) When Abraham Lincoln was elected president, he passed a law saying that slaves were to be set free, but the Unions were in disagreement and started boycotting it by attacking the southern states.(Johnson 2) The Confederates little riot was the spark of the war. After a while of fighting the union, it soon changed from fighting for the slaves freedom to fighting for everybody’s right because they didn’t want the Russians to interfere.
The battle with the most fatalities during the civil war was the battle of Getty burg. The battle of Gettysburg was crazy and intense. It was also the first war that Americans fought against other Americans. The battle of Gettysburg was important because if the confederates won the war, this nation would have been separated.
