can you graft a fruit branch to a non-fruit tree?

I live in Nova Scotia, in a house a four minute drive from the ocean. I have a birch and a maple tree in my back yard. I'm wondering if I could graft a fruit branch to one of those trees.
I'm sorry if I seem like a complete idiot with this but my Google search turned up empty.
